+My Review+

Scarlett
is one of my 10 favourite Gijoes.
I knew about her when i was kid, around 1986/87 when the
Gijoe cartoon was first aired in Italy. Watching the
episodes, i often seen some characters not available with
the toylines: i always wondered about who was "Doc",
"Gung-ho", "The Baroness" and all the others chracteres
created before the 1985 Gijoe toyline. In Italy, our first
Gijoe wave was composed by the american 1985 wave, including
Destro, Zartan, Storm Shadow and Cobra Troopers as extra.
So, Scarlett was one of the characters that i was not able
to recognize. I learned about her skills and profile just
watching the cartoon. Many years after, thanks to internet,
i discovered more about the first waves of the Gijoe line,
and so, about Scarlett.

In the past, like today, Hasbro use often faces and names of
real people for Gijoes. We have several characters based on
living persons. About some of them, we are sure, but...
others maybe not. Some Gijoes are very similar to popular
actors, musicians, and more. One of this is surely Outback:
more then any other Joes is very very similar to
Chuck
Norris!
It could be not a coincidence! Look at this picture: is
Chuck from 1985's Missing in Action II. I don't know if im
right, but, from when i was kid until today, Outback is
Chuck Norris :P

+What is Intelligence?+
Military
Intelligence
(abbreviated MI, int. Commonwealth, or intel. U.S., or J2
U.S.), is a military discipline which supports the
commanders decision making process by providing informed
analysis of available data from a wide range of sources. To
provide that informed analysis the commanders information
requirements are identified and input to a process of
gathering, analysis, protection, and dissemination of
information about the operational environment, hostile,
friendly and neutral forces and the civilian population in
an area of operations and broader area of interest.
Intelligence activities are conducted at all levels from
tactical to strategic, during peacetime, transition to war
and in war.
Most militaries maintain a military intelligence capability
to provide analytical and information collection personnel
in both specialist units and from other arms and
services.Personnel selected for intelligence duties, whether
specialist Intelligence officers and enlisted soldiers or
non-specialist assigned to intelligence may be selected for
their analytical abilities and intelligence before receiving
formal training.
Intelligence should respond to the needs of the commander,
based on the military objective and the outline plans for
the operation. The military objective provides a focus for
the estimate process, from which a number of information
requirements are derived, information requirements may be
related to terrain and impact on vehicle or personnel
movement, disposition of hostile forces, sentiments of the
local population and capabilities of the hostile order of
battle.
In response to the information requirements the analysis
staff will trawl existing information identifying gaps in
the available knowledge. Where gaps in knowledge exist the
staff may be able to task collection assets to collect
against the requirement.
Analysis reports draw on all available sources of
information, whether drawn from existing material or
collected in response to the requirement. The analysis
reports are used to inform the remaining planning staff,
influencing planning and seeking to predict adversary
intent.
+Scarlett Origins+
The surname O'Hara its for sure from Ireland. Scarlett have
also the tipical irish skin and red hair. Scarlett grew
up in
Atlanta,
Georgia.
Atlanta, the south-east city of the main scene of the famous
and classic movie "Gone with the Wind". The
codename "Scarlett" is clearly inspired to
Scarlett "Gone with the Wind" O'Hara, especially because
Gijoe Scarlett is named "Shana O'Hara". Atlanta is an
important historical city of the United States of America.
Also, Georgia is one of the first states of America:
was one of the
original Thirteen Colonies that revolted against British
rule in the American Revolution. It was the last of the
Thirteen Colonies to be established as a colony, in 1733. It
was the fourth state to ratify the United States
Constitution, on January 2, 1788. It seceded from the Union
on January 21, 1861 and was one of the original seven
Confederate states. It was the last state readmitted to the
Union, on July 15, 1870. Georgia is also known as the Peach
State and the Empire State of the South. I think that its
important for a character like Scarlett, to grew in a city
with a consistent historical heritage: she's not just a
martial arts expert, she also graduated summa cum laude from
two Ivy League universities, so her culture is huge, and
also, the facts in the history of Atlanta and Georgia gave
to her a kind of fighting spirit, a flame that never
surrender. It could be more easy for me to explain this
concept in my language (im italian), but, i hope you'll
understand anyway what i mean :)
ATLANTA—Georgia is known for its peaches. And in its capital
city, there are dozens of places named for the fuzzy fruit -
from businesses to streets like Peachtree Plaza, Peachtree
Way and Peachtree Park Drive, to name a few. But it's the
original Peachtree Street that is the spine of the city.
Running north and south from the heart of downtown Atlanta
to suburban Buckhead and beyond, you could actually use the
route as a key to the city. To be sure, not all of Atlanta's
biggest attractions are on Peachtree - you won't find the
Georgia Aquarium here, or the New World of Coca-Cola. But
you will find plenty of hotels, some interesting landmarks,
shopping and other places to visit.

Scarlett is a graduated U.s. Army Ranger. But, she have also
Covert Operations, Marine and S.A.S. training in her CV. She
is the first woman in the Gijoe RAH line story. Scarlett
was never released in Italy.
+Character Biography+
Scarlett
was one of the first members of the G.I.Joe team, and the
first female. She is as beautiful as she is deadly.
Scarlett's father and three brothers were martial arts
instructors. She began her training at age 9 and was awarded
her first black belt in Tae Kwon Do at the age of fifteen,
and has continued her training in several other martial
arts. She was not only physically ahead of her time, but
mentally as well. She graduated summa cum laude from two Ivy
League universities and went on to excel in training courses
at all four branches of the armed forces.
The Cobra organization often mistakes Scarlett for just a
pretty face rather than a member of the elite G.I.Joe team,
which makes her perfect for undercover missions. Her skills
at intelligence gathering are top notch: the
U.S. military relies on special agents to gather information
about the plans of its enemies. These agents put their lives
on the line to find and bring back this important knowledge.
Scarlett started her
counterintelligence work by analyzing evidence, setting up
surveillance equipment, and preparing reports. After she
proved her abilities in small missions, she began to conduct
field operations. Much of her job is finding and verifying
information, but that's dangerous work when you're dealing
with sources that are part of the evil Cobra organization.
Scarlett may seem open and friendly on the outside: she is a
great friend to each of the Joes, but most
of her past is cloaked in secrecy and the only G.I.Joe
team member who truly knows what is in her heart is Snake
Eyes. In her
spare time, Scarlett teach women's self-defense seminars at
various universities.

Gijoes have to say about Scarlett:

-"Scarlett

From
General Hawk's Files
"I call it a blessing to have
Scarlett on the team. She's tough, smart, reliable, and
okay—beautiful. She keeps the team in line, and the enemy on
their toes. I value her skills as both a martial artist and
an undercover operative. Snake-Eyes and she have been
through a lot. They work well as a team, on and off the
battlefield. I'd put her up against the best COBRA has to
offer, and sleep well at night, knowing she will
return—mission accomplished."

Biography

Jmm's Gijoe Encyclopedia
Scarlett was born in Atlanta, Georgia where her father and
three older brothers were martial arts instructors. Scarlett
got along well with her father and brothers, beginning her
training at nine years of age.
They discovered that Scarlett had a natural affinity for the
ancient fighting arts and was only fifteen when she was
awarded a black belt. Scarlett and her sister Siobhan never
got along well, and they drifted apart as they got older.
After joining the Army, Scarlett received a varied
education, attending Covert Ops School, Marine Sniper
School, Special Air Service School and the Marine Tae Kwon
Do symposium. Scarlett has participated in many martial arts
tournaments and is also qualified as an Army hand-to-hand
combat trainer. She is proficient in various weaponry,
including the XK-1 power crossbow and many martial arts
weapons such as shuriken, garrote and ka-bar.
Scarlett was one of the original members of the Joe team and
one of her first assignments was training the new team in
hand-to-hand combat. During one such exercise, Scarlett
first met Snake-Eyes. She bested most of the team's members,
but she recognized that Snake-Eyes was a superior fighter,
yet had allowed Scarlett to beat him. This had Scarlett
intrigued and they became close rather quickly. On a mission
into the middle east, Snake-Eyes, Scarlett, Rock 'n Roll and
Grunt were sent to save George Strawhacker from Cobra. On
the way, a helicopter accident forced the Joes to bail out,
but Scarlett was stuck in the burning chopper. Snake-Eyes
stayed behind to save her. He saved Scarlett, but a window
exploded in his face, scarring him and damaging his vocal
cords. Scarlett was knocked unconscious and when she came
to, she found herself on the medivac helicopter and
discovered Snake-Eyes and the others had continued on
without her. Afterward, they became even closer.
Scarlett became a vital member of the G.I. Joe team, even
commanding some missions from the very beginning. During
many missions together, Scarlett and Clutch had an
antagonistic relationship. She saw him as little more than a
chauvanist pig, and Clutch gave her little reason to think
otherwise. Despite this, they worked well together during a
mission to protect an American ambassador who they thought
was to be assassinated by Cobra. The diplomat turned out to
be the assassin, intent on killing the other nation's
ambassador to spark a war. Fortunately, the assassin was
stopped thanks to Scarlett's good timing and a bullet-proof
vest. Along with Zap and Snake-Eyes, Scarlett was one of the
first Joes to set foot and Springfield, a Cobra-controlled
town hidden in the United States. There, they met a
mysterious boy named Billy, who would later be revealed to
be Cobra Commander's son, helped them escape.Unfortunately,
they never learned the actual location of Springfield.
Scarlett continued on with the team and was captured by
Storm Shadow, the Cobra ninja. Soon afterward she was
rescued by Snake-Eyes. It was later discovered that Storm
Shadow was Snake-Eyes' close friend from Vietnam -- Tommy
Arashikage -- and that they had trained in the same ninja
clan.
At the opening ceremony for the renovated Pit, Scarlett and
several other original Joes received promotions. For a time
Scarlett was taken off active duty and served behind a desk
in the Pit. During this time, Scarlett and Snake-Eyes were
on leave, riding the Staten Island ferry when they were
attacked by a group of Cobra's Crimson Guardsmen led by Fred
Broca II. Snake-Eyes and Scarlett fought off the Cobras,
sending Fred II into the river. Later, Snake-Eyes and
Stalker discovered Fred II was really Wade Collins, a friend
of theirs from Vietnam. They helped Wade leave Cobra and
start a new life for himself. Scarlett returned to active
duty and Springfield when the Joes invaded the town. During
the battle, Scarlett was wounded. When Doc told her she was
"out of this fight," she answered: "Not by a long shot! Just
give me a rifle and point me in the right direction!" After
that battle, Storm Shadow burst into a training session in
the Pit. He was looking for Snake-Eyes and Scarlett tried to
protect him. Storm Shadow wasn't out to get Snake-Eyes. He
was asking his clan brother's forgiveness and vowed to end
the search for vengeance that had nearly destroyed him.
Snake-Eyes gave him the key to his cabin in the High Sierras
to let him sort out his life. Scarlett and Snake-Eyes let
Storm Shadow escape the Pit, knowing he never intended to
harm anyone.
Scarlett led a mission into the nation of Sierra Gordo when
Snake-Eyes was captured there by Cobra forces. The Joes were
unable to rescue Snake-Eyes and he was taken to the Cobra
Consulate in New York. With Storm Shadow's help, Scarlett
infiltrated the Consulate and rescued Snake-Eyes. Months
later, when Stalker, Snow Job and Quick Kick were thrown
into a gulag in the Soviet country of Borovia, Snake-Eyes
and Scarlett defied orders to rescue Stalker and the others.
They faked their own deaths, fooling even Lady Jaye and
Flint, who had accompanied them on vacation in Grenada. They
and the Blind Master went undercover in a circus that was
traveling around eastern Europe, posing as acrobats and
knife-throwers. When they returned home, Hawk decided not to
reprimand them. Flint was angry that they had left he and
Lady Jaye out of the mission and fooled them into thinking
they were dead. He came to realize that Scarlett and
Snake-Eyes only kept them out if it to protect them. Over
the next few years, the four of them would become close
friends. Shortly after their return Snake-Eyes and Scarlett
went on a special mission into Asia along with Chuckles and
Iceberg. The group's mission went on for months when many
possible extraction sites were compromised. As a result,
they were not a part of the Cobra Island civil war and the
subsequent rescue of Hawk from corrupt government officials.
After that mission's conclusion, Scarlett, Snake-Eyes, Flint
and Lady Jaye went on an undercover mission into eastern
Europe to monitor Cobra activity in the region.
Eventually, Snake-Eyes decided it was time to try and
undergo reconstructive surgery to repair his damaged face.
He only wanted to be able to be in public with Scarlett like
some many other "normal" people could do. During his surgery
in Bern, Switzerland, Scarlett was attacked by the Baroness
who thought Snake-Eyes had killed her brother in Vietnam
back in 1968. To spite him, the Baroness shot Scarlett in
the head, putting her into a coma for months. While
unconscious, Scarlett's sister Siobhan tried to have her
sister taken off life support. Meanwhile, Storm Shadow sent
the despondent Snake-Eyes into Borovia on a mission, hoping
he could forget what had happened to Scarlett. When Scarlett
awoke from her coma, she almost killed Storm Shadow,
believing he had caused Snake-Eyes' death. Snake-Eyes
survived his mission, and he and Scarlett were reunited.
Soon afterward, they both participated in the Battle of
Benzheen, during which many Joes lost their lives.
Scarlett's next assignment was to pretend she betrayed the
Joes and joined Cobra. Even Snake-Eyes learned of the plan
after Scarlett had left. Scarlett was rescued from Cobra
during a major battle in Millville, a town taken over by
Cobra. The Joes liberated the town and Scarlett returned to
the team. Scarlett and Snake-Eyes soon took some much
deserved time off and stayed at Snake-Eyes' cabin in the
High Sierras. Unfortunately, Snake-Eyes was soon forced back
into duty. Despite being upset, Scarlett gave Snake-Eyes her
blessing since the mission was to rescue Storm Shadow. In
what was one of Snake-Eyes' last missions for the Joe team,
he attacked Destro's castle in Eastern Europe. Cobra
Commander had taken over the castle and brainwashed Storm
Shadow and many other former Cobra members. They now swore
allegiance to Cobra and fought against the Joes against
their will. Snake-Eyes attempted to free Storm Shadow, but
failed. Soon afterward, the word came from the Pentagon that
the Joe team was being shut down. At an emotional ceremony
at Joe headquarters in Utah, the Joes "retired the colors"
leaving the Pit an abandoned army base.
After the Joe team was shut down, Scarlett and Snake-Eyes
were engaged to be married, and retired to a house in
Georgia. During that time, Snake-Eyes agreed to train the
young woman named Ophelia to be the last student of the
Arashikage clan. She was to undergo her final trial, but
Snake-Eyes continued her training, which began to worry
Scarlett. She didn't know that Snake-Eyes was planning to go
on one final commando mission to train Ophelia. Duke, now
working covert ops, asked Snake-Eyes to join a mission to
capture Firefly. Only a week before his planned marraige to
Scarlett, Snake-Eyes went on the mission without telling
Scarlett, believing she wouldn't approve. The mission turned
sour and a number of soldiers involved -- including Ophelia
-- were killed. She had been his apprentice, but she also
reminded him of his late sister, and her death devastated
him. He didn't return to Scarlett for a week, and the day of
their wedding came and went. When he finally arrived in
Georgia, Snake-Eyes and Scarlett spoke briefly, but the
damage was done and their engagement was ended. Snake-Eyes
retreated to the seclusion of his mountain cabin while
Scarlett tried to move on with her life. She did not see
Snake-Eyes for years.
In 2001, the G.I. Joe Team was reinstated by the government
in reponse to Cobra's return to the United States. Duke
brought many of the older Joes to help train and lead a
batch of new recruits and Scarlett is now one of the team's
highest ranking field commanders. Snake-Eyes is also a
member of the new team. At first, Scarlett maintained a
necessary working relationship with Snake-Eyes, but she had
not yet forgiven him and barely acknowledged him when off
duty. After the couple was captured by Cobra during the
nano-mite incident, they reconciled with each other while
facing their possible deaths. They were again engaged to be
married, but continued to work with the Joe team.
Scarlett's many missions for the new team have included
battling mutated soldiers in the arctic, rescuing Flint and
the Baroness from Russian mobsters, stopping Tyler
Wingfield's terrorist plot and battling against a revived
Serpentor on Cobra Island. She later joined Snake-Eyes on a
mission to seek out Cobra Commander, who was hiding in a Red
Ninja retreat in Tibet. Snake-Eyes had sent fellow ninja
T'jbang into the retreat on an unauthorized mission there,
and he needed to be rescued. This angered Hawk who put
Scarlett in charge of the mission in lieu of Snake-Eyes
after making it clear he was not happy. On that mission,
Snake-Eyes defeated the leader of the ninjas who then
pledged their loyalty to him. This turn of events upset Hawk
even further. Scarlett came to her fiancee's defense, but
Hawk placed them both on probation for their next mission
fighting Cobra troops in Badhikstan. Before they could
reconcile with their commander, Hawk was shot by Cobra
Commander and was left paralyzed in a hospital bed. In
Hawk's absense the Jugglers took the opportunity to take
control. Snake-Eyes and several other Joes were arrested,
while the Jugglers cut down the team's roster to about a
dozen members. They also placed General Philip Rey in
command of the team. After Duke's subsequent arrest, he and
Snake-Eyes were rescued by Scarlett and Storm Shadow, who
revealed he had finally broken free of Cobra's mind control
and asked for Snake-Eyes' help. Scarlett advised them both
that they should try once more to reconcile, but if they
couldn't, they should end their relationship once and for
all.
Rey, Duke and the remaining Joes fought Cobra Commander's
plans to unleash the deadly superweapon known as the
Tempest. At the same time, the Joes faced a new threat in
the group called the Red Shadows, who had begun targeting
and murdering Joe and Cobra agents. The Red Shadows also
sparked violence and instability around the globe, hoping to
take control of the world. When the Red Shadows attempted to
kill Hawk, Scarlett helped rescue him as she and Snake-Eyes
returned to the team to help in their plans to defeat both
Cobra and the Red Shadows. The battle with the new
organization became shockingly personal when while
attempting to save her husband Flint from a Red Shadows
agent, Lady Jaye was killed. Scarlett was the first Joe to
come upon the terrible scene. In the end, Duke, Hawk and
Rey's small team defeated the schemes of the Red Shadows and
Cobra. Shortly after these threats were neutralized, the
G.I. Joe team was again disbanded by the military.
One year later, the Joe team was reformed with a smaller
roster of active members, including Scarlett, Snake-Eyes and
Storm Shadow, under the command of Joe Colton. When two
orbiting satellites crashed to the Earth in Chicago and
Silicon Valley, killing thousands, the new Joe team
mobilized to discover who was causing the crashes. Colton
allowed some members of the team to investigate
independently, though some assumed the disaster was the work
of Cobra. Scarlett headed to Massachusetts to track down
former Cobra agent Cesspool. She snuck into his home late at
night to discover him in bed, dying from cancer thanks to
the toxins he had been exposed to years earlier. His wife
then appeared and a fight ensued between her and Scarlett.
The Joe won the fight, and was met by whom she thought were
the Cesspool's children, but were in fact disguised robots
who captured Scarlett. She was soon brought to Destro and
held onboard his submarine headquarters. Destro's son,
Alexander, thought having Scarlett there was dangerous and
tried to free her. Destro discovered this and argued while
Scarlett pretended to remain unconscious. She eventually
escaped, just as the Joe team arrived. Using Scarlett's
microscopic tracking device -- she and Snake-Eyes had them
implanted to keep track of one another in an emergency --
they had found her location and went on an unauthorized
rescue mission. During the mission, to stop the sub from
flooding and killing the others, Snake-Eyes locked its blast
doors from the inside as Storm Shadow watched in dismay.
When the Joes were able to get inside they found Snake-Eyes'
lifeless body. By all indications Snake-Eyes was truly dead.
As a devastated Scarlett grieved, the body was somehow
stolen. Scarlett's grief turned to anger as the Joes
attempted to track down his body. They were all shocked to
discover that the Red Ninjas, led by Sei Tin had not only
stolen his body, but they had miraculously revived him. But
Snake-Eyes had been brainwashed by the ninjas to be used as
a weapon. Scarlett and other Joes were captured by the
ninjas and Scarlett pleaded with Snake-Eyes to try and break
free of the mind control. Eventually, Storm Shadow fought
his old friend, and was being beaten until he threatened
Scarlett's life, hoping to bring his friend's mind back to
the surface. He eventually succeeded, and the Joes freed the
Red Ninjas from their new leader's influence.
When Snake-Eyes returned to the team, he revealed to
Scarlett that the Baroness was being held prisoner there
according to Storm Shadow, and while Colton knew she was
there, he kept it from the rest of the team. After Stalker
was informed, the three Joes confronted Colton, very wary of
all the past betrayals from high-ranking officers. Colton
told them he had his orders to keep the incarceration quiet,
and they had no right to know. They were interrupted by a
sudden power outage. A military commando team named the
Phoenix Guard lead by General Rey had arrived with orders to
take control of The Rock. A battle followed and Scarlett,
Colton and others hid from the attackers, hoping to get out
a call for help. Rey was under orders from the president's
chief of staff, Garret Freedlowe, but it soon became evident
that unbeknownst to Rey, his team was made up of disguised
Cobra agents. When Colton finally contacted the president,
he learned that Freedlowe had been replaced some time ago by
Cobra Commander. The Joes defeated the infiltrators, but not
before they had killed many members of the base's support
staff and the Baroness escaped. Just after that incident, a
small team of Joes including Scarlett was rushed to shut
down Cobra's illegal oil-drilling operation in the arctic.
After that mission, the Joe team took some time off to
regroup and recover from the assault on The Rock. Scarlett
and Snake-Eyes went on leave separately; her to visit her
family in Atlanta and Snake-Eyes to his mountain retreat.

Toy notes: Featured in the Ninja Force commercial. The
first female figure released since
Jinx
in 1987. Scarlett's right leg is spring-loaded for a kicking
maneuver; she is not jointed at the waist. The resulting
mold makes Scarlett look overly large-hipped.
Toy notes: Included in a 3-pack with a reprint of the
Marvel comic, as well as
Alvin "Breaker" Kibbey and
Cobra Commander. Versions before 2002 and in 2004 and
2008 were simply named "Scarlett." This version's feet have
been redesigned to admit peg holes designed to fit the skis
she uses in the comic.
Original Versions
Outback had basically two versions: the original one from
1987, and the Battle Corps one from 1993. The 1987 figure
was available also in the subsets Night Force (1988 in
two-pack with Crazylegs) and Tiger Force (1990 only in
Europe), and in Brazil in 1993 with the codename
"Forasteiro". The 1987 version of Outback share parts of his
body with Big Brawler, a 2001 Gijoe character, and also the
torso with Super Trooper and Rapid Fire. The Battle Corps
Outback from 1993 was first designed for the Eco Warriors
subset, but, when the line was cancelled, he become one of
the Battle Corps. Then, some of the body colours were
changed for a second version, available the same year.

International
Scarlett is one of the Gijoes with more international
releases,
and, also,
she had many
variants around the world! Some of them are considerated new
Gijoes, and not international versions of Scarlett: Glenda
from Argentina and Quarrel from Uk/Europe. I know she was
released in United Kingdom, but, i dont know yet if her
Action Force figure was released also in the rest of the
Europe like her "blonde" sister Quarrel. In Italy, Scarlett
was never released in any version. in Brazil, Scarlett had a
different name: Athena, but the mold and the profile was the
same. But, there was a little differences about the colors:
Athena had grey/white parts instead of grey/tan parts.
Hasbro Canada released the first version of Scarlett with a
filecard reflecting some local colors (Like many of the
earlier filecards in Canada). Based on the Canadian
Filecard, Shana O'Hara is born in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
The figure itself is the exact same as the american version.
Quriken is a Mexican
toy company who started to produce GIJoe figures in
1985 under the logo Commandos Heroicos. The
packaging was their trademark, instead of being
packed on blister card, the figures were sold in
boxes with window through which you could see the
figure. It's interesting to note that even if the
Mexican Scarlett was actually Scarlett (sold as
Oficial De Inteligencia, Nombre Clave: Scarlett),
Quriken used the molds from the Brazilian company
Estrela, so small differences seen in Brazilian
figures could also be found on mexican figures, and
it's the case here as the suit of Scarlett is more
of a whitish tone than tan (Athena, the Brazilian
look-alike of Scarlett, had a whiter suit than the
tan american Scarlett).
Estrela, a toy company
from Brazil, was the first company to obtain the
GIJoe molds and use them to create their own
figures. Athena was one of them. Based on the
Scarlett mold, this figure used only a slightly more
white plastic instead of the tan version of the
American Scarlett. There's an ESTRELA marking on the
back of the figure. Estrela did very well and
exported their toys to other parts of South America and by
the late 80s, they even used their production factories to
create figures for release in the USA.
Hasbro licensed the
rights of GIJoe to a local toy company in Argentina:
Plastirama. The argentinian version of Scarlett
looks like it's the same as the american version,
but lacks any date stamp anywhere on the figure.
Plastirama released also Glenda, a new character
with the original mold of Scarlett. Glenda is a very popular
character for the Gijoe fans, and she's probably the best
international variant of a Gijoe character.
Many belive that
Quarrel is the UK Scarlett, let's get one thing
straight: Quarrel is not Scarlett. The UK had their
own Scarlett when in 1985 the Action Force range
(which started in 1982 and were made by Palitoy)
realigned with a new unified team called simply
'Action Force' and a new enemy 'Cobra' instead of
the 'red shadows'. The new figures were all of
American origin, including 'Scarlett' (She wasn't
called Quarrel, it was Scarlett), although some UK
vehicles did survive into this range. 'Cobra' was
the enemy of the US GI Joe serie, and this marked
the beginning of a convergence of the two series.
So
Palitoy (A big UK toy company) is behind Quarrel and
the toyline Action Force. Quarrel was part of the
Action Force
team, Z Force group (Ground combat).
Quarrel was released in the UK in 1984, during the
2nd release of Action Force. Since second release of
action force, the Action Force Team concept was
introduced (which consisted of 4 groups: Z Force,
SAS Force, Q Force and Space Force) and an enemy was
introduced in the form of red shadows. Most of those
figures used the same component from the original
action force line, but others were licensed from the
US Toy Company Hasbro where they were made as GIJoe.
So Quarrel body mold\story was licensed from Hasbro
based on Scarlett. Later on, in 1992, The same
figure as Quarrel was offered in the USA at the Joe
Collector con under the name Undercover Scarlett
(later on, Palisades will offer an exclusive limited
-250 worldwide- bust of Scarlett under this paint
scheme and it will be called "Undercover Scarlett").
Quarrel was packaged exclusively with the Rapid Fire
Motorcycle and was the only female action force
figure.
Hasbro did a late
release in Japan. They released 24 figures in 1986,
packaging them in attractive colors cardbacks,
packing the Joes on blue theme cardbacks and the
Cobra on red theme cardbacks. Scarlett is the exact
same version as the american one, except that she
comes on a blue japanese cardback.
In Australia
and New Zealand, during
the 80s, GIJoe figures were repackaged by an
Australian toy company (Toltoys) and sold as Action
Man action figures. The figure is the exact same as
the american version, but packaging is different.

Equipment
[all new]
Outback had a very nice and unique equipment! His gun was a
kind of modified HK 53 A3 or an HK 308 (but im not sure of
it).
Outback
have also a tan web belt of the same color of the huge
survival backpack, this gave to him a very "ready for action
and survive" appeal :P Also, there is a very rare detail
about his figure: he had a hole in the left leg, this hole
was used to hold a flashlight accessory. All those
accessories transform Outback to a very well equipped
soldier, also if his basic figure is very clean and simple.
The same accessories were used for the Night Force & Tiger
Force versions, but with different colors (except for the
gun).
It's
interesting that the flashlight after the original version
of Outback, was better paint with the lens of different
color from the rest.
Others

For the Gijoe Convention, the original Outback was bagged

Price Guide
Outback is not easy to find "perfect". My personal figure
also have a broken gun, and the "survival" logo was faded.
So, if you looking for a perfect Outback, be sure to have:
the flashlight for the leg, the hole in the leg with no
broken parts of old flashlights (:P), the "survival logo"
not faded, the gun in good condition (the strap must be
unbent and attached), and the same must be for the web belt,
sometimes could be broken. As you can read, Outback is a
nice character, but not easy to find in good mint condition.

Glenda
The
codename "Scarlett" is clearly inspired to
Scarlett "Gone with the Wind" O'Hara, especially because
Gijoe Scarlett is named "Shana O'Hara". And also, Scarlett
was born in Atlanta, where there is the main scene of the
movie! So, there is no doubt about this ^^ There is probably
also a link with the "scalret red" color (this could be
explain in part the choice to make of Scarlett a "red hair"
girl).
Scarlett had many versions around the world: some of them
are considerated new Gijoes, and not international versions
of Scarlett.
(to know more, read up the page)
Scarlett is a qualified expert with these weapons:
|
XK-1 Power Crossbow
Small size crossbow
with a length of 12.5 inches, its draw weight is of
50 to 80 lbs. Scarlett is an all around crossbow
specialist and is known to be as efficient with some
of the bigger models like the XK-150, a 30.8 inches
crossbow with a draw weight of 150 lbs.

Throwing Stars
The Shuriken (Throwing
star) is the trade mark ninja weapon made famous by
the movies and stories about the ninja. The Shuriken
is simply a flat piece of metal with sharpened
points that were thrown at the enemy. The Shuriken
was not originally designed as a killing weapon. It
was mostly used to distract or deter so the ninja
could escape. |
|
Garotte
Nicknamed cheese
cutter, this simple strangulation weapon consist of
a very fine wire attached to steel handles. It's
used by special force units for killing silently.

Ka-Bar
Ka-Bars are the
legendary US marine fighting knife. The model shown
here is Model 1211 that has a black Kraton handle
with black powder coated metal guard and butt. It
comes with a black Kydex Sheath. A sheath material
for the new century, Kydex is well known for its
resistance to impact, corrosion, and abrasion, its
all-weather performance, and its imperviousness to
most chemicals, petroleum-based products, and
moisture, including salt water. |
|
M-14
This weapon replaced
the Garand as the mainstay of U.S. forces before the
adoption of the M16. |
|
M-16
The M16 is now
considered the standard against which all others are
measured. The prototype for this rifle came from the
Armalite AR-10, which was chambered in 7.62x51mm
NATO and designed by Eugene Stoner. The AR-10 went
into production in 1955 and was a very advanced
firearm using plastic and aluminum wherever possible
in order to reduce weight; but it proved to be too
light of a rifle for the powerful 7.62x51mm (.308
Winchester) bullet and production ceased in 1962.

|
M-1911A1
This .45 caliber
semiautomatic pistol, M1911A1, is a recoil-operated
hand weapon. It is a magazine-fed semiautomatic
weapon, which fires one round each time the trigger
is squeezed, once the hammer is cocked by prior
action of the slide or thumb. This design is
referred to as "single action only." The thumb
safety may only be activated once the pistol is
cocked. The hammer remains in the fully cocked
position once the safety is activated. (Note: More
modern pistol designs of the "double action" type
will allow the hammer to move forward to an uncocked
position when the thumb safety is activated.)
|
|
M-79
The M-79 grenade
launcher was first fielded in Vietnam in an attempt
to allow an infantry unit to provide fire support
between 50-300m, the higher end of hand grenades,
and the lower end of mortar fire. The grenade is
spin stabilized, and will automatically arm itself
based upon the rotations it has done in flight after
30m. The grenade, though less powerful than a
standard fragmentation grenade, has a lethal radius
of 5m. |
|
M-3A1
The M3 sub-machinegun,
also known as Grease gun, was developed as a cheaper
war-time alternative to famous Thompson M1A1 and
M1928 sub-machineguns. M3 and M3A1 were developed
and manufactured by General Motors Corp. M3 was
introduced in 1942, and simplified M3A1 was
introduced in 1944, and remained in service in the
USA until 1960 or so, and also was exported outside
the USA. |
|
|
M-700
(Remington Sniper Rifle)
This "Entry Level"
sniper rifle is quite capable of shooting .5 MOA
right out of the box (.75 MOA is more common). This
rifle has all the right features for the right
price. It uses a HS Precision stock with palm swells
and an aluminum bedding block. The actual action and
barrel are the same that are used on Remingtons
varmint rifles, with the difference mainly in the
stock. |
|
|
Mac-10 (Ingram)
An even faster firing
weapon than the famed Uzi, the Mac-10 is nothing
short of a fully automatic uncontrollable beast.
1400 rounds per minute’s works out to over 23 rounds
fired per second. Depressing the trigger for a
second will almost insure an empty clip in no time.
However aftermarket accessories like a silencer or
muzzle brake will alleviate the manageability of
this firearm by some margin. |
